FASD Learning Series 2011-12


The FASD Learning Series offers free education opportunities tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals affected by FASD and their family members/caregivers, support service providers, healthcare providers, educators, legal and justice services, and professionals in the research and evaluation field. Click here for a video overview of the FASD Learning Series, and how it has made a positive difference for people affected by FASD and those who support them.

New for this year, the lectures will be broadcast via live webcast, however will continue to provide participants the opportunity to interact with the presenter during a facilitated Q&A period, and meet and share with people from all areas of the FASD field. You and your colleagues can watch them as a group or on your own from any computer with high speed internet access. The series will no longer be available via videoconference. While there is no fee to attend, individuals must register for each of the lectures to receive a certificate of attendance.

September 28, 2011 ~ 9 - 11 am - Talking with Women about Alcohol and Pregnancy

This session will address FASD prevention in relation to how we communicate with pregnant women and women in their childbearing years along the continuum of risk. Combining substance-informed, trauma-informed, and Motivational Interviewing principles and approaches, strategies and skills will be shared that can be adapted to participants’ practice settings. Emphasis will be placed on opening the conversation and sharing information in a way that respects autonomy, is collaborative and avoids re-traumatization.

In this session the presenters will discuss the current literature regarding language-based interventions. Working from the limited information available specific to those with an FASD, they will also expand to a discussion of research with other populations that may inform interventions in this area. Direct application of this research will be explored, and specific strategies for intervention will be discussed. Presenters will also discuss the important of evidence-based practice, what it is and what it means to you.

  • Increased knowledge of research in language interventions
  • Increased understanding of how this research can be applied in practical ways
  • Consideration of your role in engaging in evidence based practice
